How to Identify Fake or Phishing Emails

 

 

Occasionally, players may receive official-looking emails asking for their account name, password, registered email address, and other account information. These emails, which are made to look as though they come from Blizzard Entertainment, sometimes offer free in-game items, game time, or Alpha/Beta invites for upcoming releases. In some situations, they may also threaten dire action unless the player replies with his or her login information or visits a specific website linked within the email.

 

These emails are not official correspondence from Blizzard Entertainment. They are what's known as "phishing" emails. Phishing emails will attempt to deceive you by pretending to be from Blizzard Entertainment and are ultimately designed to trick you into willingly giving your login information to a malicious party. Do not fall for these scams!

 

 

How can I tell if an email I've received is legitimate?

 

There are a few things to look for when determining whether or not an email is legitimate.

 

Emails from Blizzard Entertainment will originate from an @blizzard.com or @battle.net address.

Blizzard employees will NEVER ask you for your account password. No matter how legitimate an email may appear, if it asks for your password, it is not from Blizzard Entertainment.

Correspondence from Blizzard Entertainment will employ proper spelling and grammar. If you're able to spot multiple spelling and/or grammatical errors within an email, proceed with caution.

Phishing emails will frequently offer free in-game pets or mounts, several days or months of game time, or Alpha/Beta invites to upcoming Blizzard Entertainment games. If the offer sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Don't accept any offer until you can confirm it's official.

Phishing emails will also frequently claim that an account has been found in violation of a specific policy and will be closed if the owner does not "verify ownership." The "verification" process usually includes replying directly to the email and providing very detailed account information (name, password, email address, CD key, etc). This is not a standard practice of Blizzard Entertainment.

In some cases, phishing emails will ask account owners to visit a malicious website instead. These websites will frequently ask the account owner to "log in," a process which will require the both an account name and password. Through this process, these malicious websites able to glean your account information. If you are ever asked to visit a website linked within an email, please be extremely cautious and always double-check the destination of the hyperlink.

 

 

So, if the sending address of an email is showing as @blizzard.com or @battle.net, then the email is definitely legitimate?

 

Actually, no. Even if you receive an email from an @blizzard.com or an @battle.net address, it's still important to remain cautious. This is because it's possible to change how a sending address appears in the "From" field of an email. The process is known as "spoofing" and may cause a phishing email to initially look like it's been sent by Blizzard Entertainment. To determine the actual sending address of an email, you will need to check the email's header information.

 

How do I access email header information?

 

Email headers contain information about the sender (who sent the email message), the path the email took to reach your inbox, and things that may have happened to the email before arriving. This information is very important and can be used to determine whether or not an email is malicious.

 

Most email providers and applications will allow you to view an email's header information with just a few mouse clicks. We've included instructions regarding how to access email headers using some of the more common email providers and applications below.

 

For Gmail:

 

Open the email message and click the "down" arrow next to the "Reply" button. Select "Show Original."

 

For Yahoo:

 

Open the email message and then click on the "Full Headers" option in the lower right-hand corner.

 

For AOL:

 

Open the email message and click "Details" under the "To" field.

 

For Windows Live:

 

Right-click the email message and select "View Source."

 

For Hotmail and MSN:

 

You must first open the msg.

On the right side of the msg under the date is an "actions" link.

Click the "actions" link and then select "View Message Source"

What should I look for in the header?

 

Once you've accessed an email's header information, you'll want to attempt to verify the sending address. To do this, look at the "Return-Path" or the "originating address" for the email. For most phishing emails, the email address displayed in this location will differ from the address displayed in the "From" field.

 

A legitimate header from Blizzard Entertainment should look something like this:

To prosze Cie powiedz jak to zrobic, dzwonilem juz do blizza z pytaniem odnosnie tego i jest to blad. Nie ma takiej mozliwosci. FAQ jest blednie napisane bo tez czytalem.

Nawet w panelu rejestracji nie ma mozliwosci rejestracji pre-paidow, tylko karta.

 

To gdzie nie mam racji?
